Community-powered regeneration
Building enough homes and revitalising places are among this country’s biggest challenges.
We face a perfect storm of a chronic undersupply of new houses with a growing population and ever-centralised economy that leaves places and communities lagging behind. Exacerbating this problem is the combination of blunt top-down targets, unproductive ‘planning reform’ debates, and a plethora of similar-but-different funding streams alongside the local tribal narrative battle between ‘NIMBYs’ and ‘YIMBYs’.
New Local is undertaking a major research project looking at how community power could build better regeneration and development in the UK. By working alongside communities, we are exploring whether it is possible to break down the adversarial nature of the system and ensure the design, schemes, and service provision gain the early support required for delivering better outcomes and swifter agreement.
