Supporting community assets to last

New Local is working with Local Trust to draw on the learning from Big Local and other research to explore how to support the establishment and long-term sustainability of community-run spaces.

As part of our research, we will review existing insight on the benefits these spaces deliver, examine the conditions required to ensure they thrive in the long-term, and explore the role funders, local authorities, and the national government should play in supporting their longevity. 

In thinking about this work, we will assess challenges and opportunities at three key stages of a community-led space’s life-cycle:

• The period before the community takes on the running of the space
• The point at which the community begins running the space
• The long-term future of the space
