Tackling inequalities within communities is a vital issue for all local authorities. But often equalities strategies do not deliver for residents in a way that they expect or need. How can you centre equity in your Council’s work to ensure best outcomes for communities?

At this session we will hear about how Barnet have developed their equalities strategy, A Fairer Barnet, to include service areas adopting equity objectives and adapting their core work to address inequalities. We will explore the nuts and bolts of developing this strategy, hearing from Hal Kharnom, Head of Strategy and Community Participation, who will also set out how they are embedding the strategy across the council.

We will focus on practical delivery and provide you with vital takeaways for your work, including answers to the questions:

  • How do you build an equalities strategy that delivers for a corporate plan?
  • How do you bring the voice of the community into internal policy making?
  • What is the impact of this way of working?
