Tackling empty homes in the UK is a critical step toward addressing the housing crisis and revitalizing communities. With thousands of properties lying unused while housing demand continues to soar, councils bringing these homes back into use can significantly increase the supply of housing, and affordable housing in their places.

At this session we will hear from Steve Grimshaw, who is working with his colleagues on the award winning No Use Empty project at Kent County Council.  This year they are celebrating the project’s 20th anniversary, and we will hear insights into how the scheme has developed and delivers impact year on year.

We will explore the nuts and bolts of the project; the loan scheme that ensures money is recycled back into the local economy; the relationships that have grown with developers and landlords and the benefits for the community.

We will focus on practical delivery and provide you with vital takeaways for your work, including answers to the questions:

  • How do you go about starting a scheme like this?
  • What partnerships or collaborations are crucial to its success?
  • What is the impact of this scheme for the council, and for communities?
