New Local appoints two new Directors to its leadership team

New Local is delighted to announce the appointment of two new senior leaders to its team: Emma Southgate as Director of Practice and Programmes, and Helen Power as Director of Partnerships and Engagement.

These appointments mark an exciting step forward in New Local’s mission to grow community power approaches across the UK and champion place-based public service reform.

Emma will lead our practice and programmes, including our policy and thought leadership, as well as practical support across the country to councils, NHS and other public and voluntary bodies focused on innovative, community-led approaches that transform local services.

She brings a combination of experience to New Local: radical public sector innovation, from nearly a decade at Participle, combined with a deep understanding of the complexity of public service delivery, gained at Deloitte working on large complex transformation projects across central and local government.

Emma said “I’m delighted to be joining New Local, an organisation with a mission that I have long shared, and at a time where the policy context offers real opportunity to grow community-powered approaches in practice. I’m looking forward to benefiting from the wealth of experience of our membership in our practice and programmes work and at the same time sharing what we are learning on the ground.”

As Director of Partnerships and Engagement, Helen will oversee New Local’s strategic approach to its networks, relationships and external affairs, furthering the reach and impact of our work. She joins New Local after more than a decade working at the intersection of local economies, communities and public services. Most recently, she was an Associate Director at the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES).

Helen said “I’m excited to be joining New Local at such a pivotal time for local government. The need to give communities a stronger voice in shaping their places has never been more urgent and I have long admired New Local’s work on community power and public service reform. I can’t wait to work with the New Local members and partners whose pioneering work have inspired it.”

Commenting on the appointments, New Local’s Chief Executive, Jessica Studdert, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Emma and Helen to our leadership team. They each bring a wealth of expertise and passion to New Local, and we are excited for the impact they will make.

“Emma and Helen will help lead us through our next phase as an organisation dedicated to supporting stronger local public services and more resilient, community powered places.”
