How We Did It: Participatory Action Research
Co-designing with marginalised communities can have hugely positive impacts but is often a challenge for many local authorities to do in reality.
At this session we heard from Toynbee Hall who have used a method called participatory action research to improve the participation of marginalised residents in local change-making. We put Xia Lin, Head of Research from Toynbee Hall in our hot seat.
Xia shared her experience of using this method across a range of projects, from supporting residents to review a council’s Tackling Poverty strategy, to delivering a three year research and social action project on community safety.
This session focused entirely on practical delivery and will provide you with vital takeaways for your work, including answers to these questions:
- What is participatory action research?
- How could this approach help me to create more inclusive spaces and support marginalised residents to be local change makers?
- How can I use these co-design principles to shift power relationships and improve community relations?
